CORKY ROMANO is a film with bits.

It was a movie I went seeing it blank headed, I don’t even see Saturday Night Live very much, so I don’t know who is Chris Kattan (Corky Romano) he is a assistant Vet and loves animals, he gets a call from his POP, to come visit him because he had a heart attack, Chris Kattan does physical comedy, his face making, his shaking and his bumbling incompetence is supposed to be his craft to evoke in us laughter. I have described the tools now let me describe the plot, I liked the plot it was original Corky's POP is Peter Falk (Francis A. 'Pops' Romano) he is a small mobster, he did some money laundering and some pushing people, he never did murders and drugs.

The family is 3 sons one is corky other 2 are Paulie Romano (Peter Berg)Peter Romano (Chris Penn) and the POP, except CORKY all are in the Mafia business, because corky was a softie and has tastes like his mother, he was kicked out of the family after the death of mother. Now that FBI is keeping Peter, Paulie and POP under close surveillance they cannot destroy the evidence against them in the hands of FBI. POP says he is being framed, he does not know ( Fred Ward) Leo Corrigan the younger brother is involved in high crimes big time and the blame is coming on POP being the head of the family. Corky is forced by the family to play FBI agent for 1 day go in and go to evidence room and destroy the file of POP. A fake ID maker is recruited to make papers of AGENT PISSANT. Away we go with AGENT PISSANT, the over zealous fake ID maker gives an excellent reputation to CORY ROMANO and he even sends a message to FBI office, this HARVARD educated agent is going to pay the station a visit.

Chief Howard Shuster(Richard Roundtree) is waiting for Agent Pissant to enter the station and grabs him for a new case which is giving him bad name and lot of dead bodies are turning up in their jurisdiction. Corky meets Agent Brick Davis (Matthew Glave)Agent Kate Russo (Vinessa Shaw) what a good looking actress they become a team and immediately go to crime scene, there is a dead body, Corky being Vet sees Moths around the dead body and immediately the time of death is determined by every agent present there. First time Director can be forgiven for his faults (Rob Pritts) there are very nice funny situations and very nice funny dialogues but the cueing is not very good, this is the reasons the storm of hilarity never comes only few smiles and a few giggles are all I got out of this film.

The handicaps are green Director and Television artist Chris Kattan first film, even though his acting is very good, he was not able to time his comedy well. The merits are good established supporting actors PETER FALK, RICHARD ROUNDTREE, FRED WARD, PETER BERG, CHRIS PENN, VINESSA SHAW and other many good actors. I must tell you Vinessa Shaw is a looker, she has some solitary scenes in this film for herself, she has good potential, the romance angle was not developed, there are some tasty bits like these well spread all over the film, it could be enjoyable to not very critical people like me, I don’t see my own faults, other people faults come to my knowledge without me trying to know it.

Some humor worth mention was Corky about the enter the FBI building for the first time, Corky's love of animals overpowers him to give mouth to mouth to a dying dog, Corky objecting to a assignment in the agents conference and asking his boss why don’t you give this assignment to so and so etc., It was childish but pretty, this movie is a bit childish there is no sex and no mature adult comedy. It is all lot of funny motions, one such action is Corky bending down and sending message to his brothers to come and get him out. Because he is wired a microphone by his brothers to assure him when he is in a fix just tell us and we will come and rescue you.

There are some sentimental moments between the family, attributing homosexuality to elder brother was in bad taste and useless waste, this is what happens when you don’t have a solid script to back you in the film, the film tries to look appealing to every section of the audience, in feeding bits to everyone nobody is satiated and everybody is left hungry in the end. This film leaves you hungry for humor. A film maker must be selfish, he must do things for himself and he must aim his film at one type of audience, there is a central motor to every film, this film had lot of kinetic propellers but never a big one central all carrying motor.

I cannot do any work without my heart behind it, so it is difficult for me to write a review of film which I did not enjoy, anyway this film needs mention because we will see lot of Chris Kattan in future films already this actor has good reputation, in the hands of a professional director and good script he can be funny after all, the potential is visible and the girl Vinessa Shaw has good looks and good acting potential, everyone even Peter Falk looked shallow in this film, there is a never filling shallowness we cannot come out of this mood of shallowness even with the ending of this film.

I may not recommend this film, I love comedy and I wish I could recommend this film but I wont go against my heart. So giving it a miss is no big deal.
